Upon successful completion of this EMT/ pre-paramedicine certificate of technical studies, students will meet the minimum requirements to apply for any paramedic program within the Montana University System. At the completion of ECP 131 (Emergency Medical Technician with Clinical), students 18 years or older may sit for the National Registry EMT exam. Being a certified EMT is also a requirement for becoming a paramedic. Paramedics are licensed individuals who under the remote supervision of physicians, are trained to recognize, assess, and manage medical emergencies in prehospital settings. They also supervise ambulance personnel. A paramedic program Includes instruction in basic, intermediate, and advanced EMT procedures; emergency surgical procedures; medical triage; rescue operations; crisis scene management and personnel supervision; equipment operation and maintenance; patient stabilization, monitoring, and care; drug administration; identification and preliminary diagnosis of diseases and injuries; communication and computer operations; basic anatomy, physiology, pathology, and toxicology; and professional standards and regulations. 

Graduates are prepared to:

  • Evaluate patients' symptoms and administer the appropriate treatments.
  • Explain procedures to patients who are in life-threatening situations or in extreme mental distress.
  • Relay information to others on the medical team using the appropriate terminology.
  • Apply basic computer skills, critical thinking skills, and written communication skills needed to enter the medical workforce or apply to a paramedic program.
